75 Maharashtra police personnel will be honoured with President’s medals on Republic Day, with 31 gallantry awards going to officers from Gadchiroli for their relentless fight against Naxalism.

    Background and Context

Republic Day celebrations in India are traditionally marked by a parade of valor and service, and this year the focus is on the bravery and dedication of Maharashtra’s police force. The state’s 75 awardees include 31 Medals for Gallantry, four President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 40 Medals for Meritorious Service. The 31 gallantry recipients hail from Gadchiroli, a district that has been at the frontline of the state’s anti-Naxal operations for decades. Their recognition underscores the ongoing struggle against Left Wing Extremism (LWE) and highlights the critical role of law enforcement in maintaining internal security.

According to the Union Home Ministry, a total of 982 personnel from police, fire brigade, home guard, and civil defence units across India were selected for gallantry and service medals ahead of Republic Day. Maharashtra’s 31 gallantry awards place it second only to Jammu & Kashmir, which received 33. The list also includes 101 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service nationwide.

    Key Developments

In a ceremony held at the Mumbai Police Headquarters, the President’s Medals were conferred by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, while the Home Minister presented the gallantry awards. The ceremony highlighted the following:

    • 31 Medals for Gallantry awarded to officers who displayed extraordinary courage in confronting LWE insurgents. Notable recipients include Naik Constable Bitaji Veladi and Constable Kare Irpa Atram, both of whom lost their lives in the line of duty.
    • 4 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service given to senior officers for exemplary leadership and strategic contributions. Awardees include Additional Commissioner Mahesh Patil, DCP Balkrishna Yadav, ACP Cyrus Irani, and ACP Vitthal Kubade.
    • 40 Medals for Meritorious Service recognizing sustained excellence over years of service. Among them are Inspector Generals Rajiv Jain and Sudhir Hiremath, Superintendent of Police Sheela Sail (Maharashtra ATS), DCPs Mohan Dahikar and Purushottam Karad, ACP Mahesh Tawde, and Inspector Suvarna Shinde, head of Mumbai’s West Region Cybercrime Police Station.

“These awards are a testament to the unwavering commitment of our police personnel,” said Home Minister Rajesh Sharma. “Their bravery and professionalism keep our communities safe and inspire the next generation of law enforcement officers.”

The Home Ministry’s release also noted that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) received 12 bravery citations, the only Central Armed Police Force to do so in the current cycle.

    Impact Analysis

For residents of Maharashtra, the awards reinforce a sense of pride and trust in the state’s policing institutions. The recognition of officers from Gadchiroli, a region often associated with insurgency, signals a shift towards a more nuanced narrative—one that acknowledges the sacrifices made by law enforcement in restoring peace.

Students and young professionals, particularly those aspiring to join the police force, can draw several lessons:

    • Career Pathways – The diversity of awardees—from constables to Inspector Generals—illustrates that dedication and performance can lead to recognition at all levels.
    • Training Emphasis – The focus on cybercrime and anti-Naxal operations highlights the evolving skill sets required in modern policing.
    • Ethical Standards – The gallantry awards underscore the importance of courage, integrity, and adherence to duty, qualities that are essential for any law enforcement career.

Moreover, the awards serve as a reminder that public safety is a collective responsibility. Communities that support and cooperate with police initiatives can help create safer environments, thereby reducing the need for extreme measures.

    Expert Insights and Practical Guidance

Dr. Anil Kumar, a professor of Criminal Justice at Mumbai University, emphasized the significance of these awards for the broader security ecosystem. “Recognition not only boosts morale but also sets benchmarks for performance,” he said. “For students, understanding the criteria for gallantry and meritorious service can guide their preparation for police examinations and training programs.”

For students preparing for the Maharashtra Police Recruitment Examination (MPR), here are actionable tips:

    • Focus on Physical Fitness – The exam includes a rigorous physical test. Incorporate running, push-ups, and flexibility drills into your routine.
    • Study Current Affairs – Pay special attention to national security issues, especially LWE and cybercrime, as these are frequently tested.
    • Develop Soft Skills – Communication, leadership, and ethical decision-making are evaluated during interviews and group discussions.
    • Simulate Real-World Scenarios – Practice situational judgment tests that mimic on-ground policing challenges.
    • Leverage Online Resources – Use reputable coaching centers and online platforms that offer mock tests and study materials tailored to the MPR syllabus.

Additionally, aspiring officers should consider internships or volunteer work with local police departments or NGOs focused on community policing. Such exposure provides practical insights into the day-to-day responsibilities and the impact of law enforcement on society.

    Looking Ahead

The Maharashtra Police Department has announced plans to expand its anti-Naxal training modules, incorporating advanced surveillance technology and community engagement strategies. The state also intends to introduce a “Digital Policing Initiative” aimed at enhancing cybercrime detection and prevention.

On the national front, the Home Ministry is expected to release a revised list of gallantry and service awards for the upcoming Republic Day, with a focus on recognizing contributions from the National Security Guard (NSG) and the Border Security Force (BSF). The Ministry has also hinted at a new “Service Excellence Award” to be introduced for officers who demonstrate sustained performance over a decade.

For students and professionals, these developments signal a growing demand for multidisciplinary skills—combining traditional policing with technology, data analytics, and community outreach. Staying abreast of these trends will be crucial for those seeking a career in law enforcement.
